Lead and cadmium are in the glaze, not the clay
This distinction is the whole subject, and getting it right changes what you should look for.
Clay fired into porcelain or stoneware is essentially inert. The glaze is the coating — a glassy layer melted onto the surface — and that is where problem metals historically lived. Lead was used because it makes a glaze glossy and helps it melt smoothly at lower temperatures. Cadmium was used because it produces the bright reds, oranges and yellows that other pigments struggle to achieve.
When a glaze is correctly formulated and fired hot enough, those metals are locked into the glass structure. When it is not, they can migrate into food — particularly acidic food, which is why the official test method simulates contact with things like citrus juice and tomato sauce.
This is why one listing’s phrasing stands out. MALACASA does not say “lead-free dinnerware”. It says lead free glaze surface. That is the technically correct location for the claim, and a seller who words it that precisely is describing something real rather than repeating a marketing phrase.
It is also why firing temperature is relevant rather than decorative. MALACASA states firing at 1400°C, and Umite Chef also gives a firing temperature. High-temperature firing is what vitrifies a body and locks a glaze in place.
What the actual limits are
“Lead-free” is a marketing phrase rather than a regulatory category, so it is worth knowing what the real thresholds are.
The FDA sets action levels for leachable lead and cadmium in ceramicware through its Compliance Policy Guides — CPG 545.450 covers lead and CPG 545.400 covers cadmium. Crucially, these are leaching limits measured by an acid-extraction test, not a requirement that the material contain none. The tolerable threshold runs up to around 3.0 mg/L depending on the article.
California’s Proposition 65 is far stricter. Its limit for extractable lead is 0.226 mg/L for flat tableware — plates and saucers — and 0.100 mg/L for hollowware such as bowls and mugs. Hollowware is tighter because food sits in it longer.
So a dish can be entirely legal under federal rules and still leach more than California permits without a warning label. When a seller says “lead-free” and names no standard, you do not know which of those bars it is describing, or whether anyone measured.
What would make the claim solid is a named standard and a test result — Prop 65 compliance, or an FDA extraction figure. No listing here provides one. One references “rigorous testing in globally recognized laboratories”, which is the closest anybody comes and still names neither the laboratory nor the standard.
None of this means these dishes are dangerous. Modern dinnerware from established manufacturers is overwhelmingly fine, and the genuine risk cases are old, imported, handmade or brightly decorated pieces. It means the claims are softer than they look.
Where decoration changes the question
Four of these five sets are plain white, off-white or reactive-glazed in earth tones. One has hand-painted navy blue rims.
Decoration is not automatically a problem, and two things make it much less of one: modern pigments largely replaced lead and cadmium decades ago, and a rim design keeps the decoration away from the center of the plate where food and cutlery sit.

This wins on wording as much as on substance, and the wording is the substance.
“Lead free glaze surface.” Not lead-free dinnerware, not non-toxic, not eco-friendly. The glaze is where lead would be, and that is where the claim is placed. It is a small precision that separates a seller describing its process from a seller repeating a phrase.

That combination is what earns the score. Cadmium is the colorant metal, so a maker producing earth-toned reactive glazes has more reason to address it than a maker producing white porcelain — and this one does, explicitly.

The best-looking set here, and a strong seller. Sixteen pieces for four, with a French bistro navy rim, well-judged sizes and an unusually thoughtful bowl design — a wide flat base with low curved sides that works for grain bowls and pasta as well as cereal, which the listing explains properly.
Porcelain is also the more durable ceramic body, and chip and scratch resistance are claimed.

Porcelain, stoneware or tempered glass?
Porcelain is fired hottest, which vitrifies the body and makes it dense and essentially non-porous. It is the thinnest and strongest of the ceramics, resists chipping best, and usually costs more. Two sets here are porcelain.
