What makes food genuinely organic

“Natural” and “clean” are not regulated on food labels. The USDA Organic seal is. When we research an organic food, we weigh these first:

  • USDA Certified Organic: grown and handled without synthetic pesticides, GMOs, or synthetic fertilizers, and verified by a third party.
  • Ingredient simplicity: a short, recognizable ingredient list with no needless additives, sweeteners, or fillers.
  • Traceable sourcing: single-origin or clearly-sourced products, which matter most for fraud-prone items like honey and olive oil.
  • Freshness and processing: raw, cold-pressed, or minimally processed where it preserves quality, with clear harvest or roast dates.
