What makes a household product genuinely cleaner

“Natural,” “green,” and “non-toxic” are not regulated claims on household goods, and there is no USDA Organic seal for a detergent or a diaper. So we look past the marketing to signals that actually mean something:

  • GOTS certification for textiles: the Global Organic Textile Standard covers both organic growing and the dyes and finishes, and is the strongest signal for cotton bedding, underwear, and sleepwear.
  • Third-party marks for cleaners: in categories with no organic seal, look for EWG Verified, EPA Safer Choice, or the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, plus a fully disclosed ingredient list.
  • Fragrance-free and dye-free: fragrance is among the most common contact allergens, so removing it matters most for sensitive skin, babies, and eczema.
  • Honest claims: we treat vague words like “biodegradable” and “compostable” with caution, since they often apply only under specific industrial conditions.
