The short version
These machines do two jobs that pull in opposite directions. An air purifier removes particles, including mold spores. A humidifier adds moisture, and moisture is the one thing mold actually needs. Running both from the same box is perfectly reasonable in a dry winter room. It is a bad idea in a room that is damp already, and almost none of the listings we read say so.
Our top pick is the Blueair 2-in-1 Pro, with an Organic Integrity Score of 91 out of 100. It is by some distance the most expensive unit here, and it is the only one whose listing publishes both of its coverage figures in the same sentence.
The EPA’s guidance is specific: “Keep indoor humidity below 60 percent (ideally between 30 and 50 percent) relative humidity.” That is the number a humidifier can push you past. So the question that decides this category is not how much mist a machine makes. It is whether you can tell it to stop.
We checked all five listings for that single control. Two let you set a target humidity. One states plainly that you cannot. Two never mention it.

The contradiction sitting in the middle of this category
Start with the government guidance, because it is unusually blunt. The EPA’s mold booklet says to “keep indoor humidity below 60 percent (ideally between 30 and 50 percent) relative humidity”. It goes on to recommend air conditioners and dehumidifiers as the tools for getting there.
Read the whole document and you will notice something. In a guide about controlling moisture indoors, humidifiers are never mentioned at all. Not warned against, not endorsed. They simply do not appear, because the entire subject is getting moisture out of a building rather than putting it in.
That is not an argument against humidifiers. Winter air in a heated house is genuinely dry, and dry air causes real problems: cracked lips, static, irritated sinuses, split furniture. It is an argument against buying a humidifier to solve a problem you have diagnosed as mold.
The EPA also gives the timescale that makes this concrete: “If wet or damp materials or areas are dried 24-48 hours after a leak or spill happens, in most cases mold will not grow.” Mold is a function of how long a surface stays wet. A humidifier’s whole purpose is to raise the moisture content of the air around every surface in the room, continuously, overnight, for months.
So the honest framing for this category is narrow, and we will state it once here rather than hedge through the whole page. A combo unit is a dry-air appliance with a filter attached. Buy it if your air is dry and you also want particle filtration. Do not buy it if you have a musty smell, a damp basement, or visible growth. The one control that matters, and how few machines have it
If the risk is overshooting 60 percent relative humidity, then the specification that matters is whether the machine will stop on its own. There are three tiers here and the listings are surprisingly readable once you know to look.
A humidistat with a target you set. Hunter’s listing is explicit: you can “set the desired humidity level”. That is the control you want. You pick 45 percent, the machine holds it, and the question of overshoot is settled by the appliance rather than by you remembering.
An auto mode built on a humidity sensor. Blueair’s unit runs an auto mode that reads the room. This is close to as good, with one caveat worth understanding: an auto mode chooses the target for you, and the listing does not publish what that target is.
Mist level only, or nothing stated. HomBreez lets you pick a mist level, which is a rate, not a destination. Set it high in a small closed bedroom and it will keep producing mist regardless of what the room has already reached. Homedics does not mention humidity control at all in the copy we could read.
Then there is Airthereal, which deserves credit for a sentence most brands would have deleted. Its own feature bullet, describing its smart sensors, ends: “Please note that the desired humidity could not be set.” The machine detects humidity and reports it, but you cannot give it a number to hold. That is a genuine limitation, disclosed by the manufacturer, in the listing, unprompted. Across every appliance category we have audited, that is rare enough to be worth paying for elsewhere in the listing.
Evaporative or ultrasonic decides the dust
Humidifiers add water to air in two common ways, and the difference shows up on your furniture.
Evaporative units pull air through a wet wick. Water leaves as vapor; whatever was dissolved in it stays behind on the wick. That has two consequences. There is no white mineral dust, and the wick becomes a consumable that has to be replaced or washed. It also means the unit is partly self-limiting, because evaporation slows as the air around it gets more humid.
Ultrasonic and cool mist units atomize water into droplets. Everything dissolved in the water goes into the room with it. With hard water that means fine mineral dust settling on surfaces, and in a combo unit those minerals land on your HEPA filter, which you are paying to replace.
Three of our five say evaporative in the listing. HomBreez describes an “ultra-fine cool mist”, which is the language ultrasonic units use. Airthereal does not specify the mechanism at all.
If your tap water leaves scale in a kettle, this is not a small consideration. It is the difference between wiping a shelf occasionally and wiping every hard surface in the room weekly, and between a filter that lasts its rated life and one that greys early.
Two filters, two schedules, one machine
A combo unit has a particle filter and a water path, and they age differently. This is the running cost the listings tend to bury.
Blueair is the exception and publishes the details: a machine washable wick filter, an air filter rated up to nine months, and the actual replacement part numbers so you can price them before buying rather than after. Airthereal sells a replacement filter set for the AEH300 as a separate listing. HomBreez has a filter reminder light and app notification, which tells you when but not what it costs.
The washable wick matters more than it sounds. On an evaporative unit the wick is the part that goes hard with scale, smells if left damp, and needs the most attention. A wick you can put through a machine changes the ownership experience considerably compared with one you buy four times a year.
What we looked for
We scored these five on what the listing itself discloses, using the same method we apply to every product on this site. Specifically:
Whether a target humidity can be set. The single control that separates a useful appliance from a machine that can push a room past 60 percent unattended.
Whether both coverage figures appear. A room-size claim measured at one air change per hour is a different number from the same machine measured at the rate that actually clears a room. We explain that arithmetic in the mold guide; here we simply record who publishes both.
Whether the humidifier mechanism is named. Evaporative and ultrasonic behave differently enough that leaving it out is a meaningful omission.
Whether filter costs are discoverable before purchase. Part numbers, rated life, or washability.
Whether the listing implies the unit addresses mold. We marked down copy that gestures at mold while selling a device that raises humidity.

This is the most expensive machine here by a wide margin, and it earns the score on disclosure rather than on price. Its listing contains this line: “Rapidly purifies 1,875 sq ft in 1 hour, 391 sq ft every 12.5 minutes.”
Those two figures describe the same machine at two different standards. Twelve and a half minutes into an hour is 4.8 air changes per hour, the rate the industry uses when it wants to describe a room actually being cleared rather than merely stirred. Publishing both, in one sentence, without being asked, is the single most useful thing a manufacturer in this category can do, and Blueair is the only one of our five that does it.
The humidifier side is evaporative with a washable wick, which removes both the white dust problem and the recurring wick cost. The listing names the genuine replacement filter part numbers, so the running cost is knowable before you buy.
What we liked: The honesty of the coverage line, a wick you can wash rather than replace, a nine-month filter interval stated in plain language, and part numbers published so nothing about ownership cost is a surprise.
Keep in mind: It costs several times what the others cost. The auto mode reads humidity but the listing does not publish the target it holds, so if you want a specific number this is not the machine that gives it to you. Tank capacity is not stated in the listing.

The feature that earns this its place is structural: the humidifier module detaches, leaving a standalone air purifier. Given everything above about humidity and mold, a machine you can run as a purifier for nine months and a combo for three is a better fit for how most people actually live than a unit welded into one mode.
It also carries real-time PM2.5 detection with a color-coded indicator, which is a sensor rather than a claim, and the fan responds to it.
Two things hold the score down. The first is that sentence about humidity: you cannot set a target. We rate the disclosure highly and the limitation poorly, and those are separate judgments. The second is a filtration claim that does not quite work. The listing says it captures “99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.03 microns”. The 99.97 percent figure is the HEPA specification, and the HEPA specification is defined at 0.3 microns, not 0.03. One of those numbers has a decimal point in the wrong place, and we cannot tell from the listing which.
What we liked: A humidifier you can physically remove, a real particulate sensor driving the fan, and a manufacturer willing to print an inconvenient limitation in its own feature bullet.
Keep in mind: No humidity target means no unattended cap. The humidification mechanism is never named, so you cannot tell whether to expect white dust. The 0.03 micron figure should be treated as unverified.

If you accept the argument at the top of this page, this is arguably the most sensible purchase here. Its listing states you can “set the desired humidity level”, and it is evaporative with a 1.1 gallon tank. That combination — a target you choose, and a mechanism that self-limits and produces no mineral dust — addresses both of the risks this category creates.
It scores below the two above it on disclosure rather than on capability. The filtration description gives a particle size of 0.3 microns but never states an efficiency percentage, so we cannot tell whether this is a true HEPA filter or a filter that catches some particles of that size. Those are very different products and the listing does not distinguish them.
What we liked: A genuine humidistat, plainly described. Evaporative humidification with a large tank. The only unit here where holding 45 percent is a setting rather than a chore.
Keep in mind: No efficiency percentage on the filter claim and no coverage area at all, so you are buying humidity control with an unspecified filter attached. Stock has been intermittent.

The cheapest unit here and the best selling of the true combos, and its filtration claim is the most precisely worded of the five: H13 True HEPA, 99.97 percent, at 0.3 microns. That is the standard stated correctly, with the grade named. It also lists ETL certification, BPA-free materials and an automatic shut-off when the water runs out, which are safety specifics rather than adjectives.
Two things keep it out of the top half. It is a cool mist unit, which is the language ultrasonic humidifiers use, so with hard water expect mineral dust — and in this machine that dust has a HEPA filter to land on.
The second is the aromatherapy tray. The listing promotes adding essential oils, and oils and HEPA media are a poor combination: the oil coats the fibers it lands on. If you buy this, our advice is to use one function or the other, and if you want scent, keep it away from the machine you are paying to filter your air.
What we liked: A correctly stated HEPA claim with the filter grade named, real safety certifications, a 20 hour runtime on low, and app control at a price well below everything else here.
Keep in mind: Cool mist means likely mineral dust on hard water. Mist level is a rate, not a target, so there is no humidity cap. The essential oil tray sits inside a machine built around a filter that oils degrade.

This is the most recognizable name in the comparison and it publishes the least. The central filtration claim in its listing is that it “combines 2 proven filtration technologies to remove airborne allergens and reduce odors & VOC”. Neither technology is named. There is no efficiency percentage, no particle size, no HEPA grade, no coverage figure, no tank capacity and no mention of humidity control.
We want to be fair about what that means. It is not evidence the machine performs badly, and Homedics is an established brand in this aisle. It is evidence that nothing about the machine can be checked before you buy it, which on this site is the thing we score.
It is listed as evaporative, which is the better mechanism, and that is genuinely worth something. Beyond that, a buyer comparing this against the four above it is comparing a specification sheet with a slogan.
What we liked: Evaporative humidification, an established brand, and a VOC reduction claim that at least names a class of pollutant.
Keep in mind: No named filtration technology, no efficiency figure, no particle size, no coverage area, no tank size and no humidity control mentioned. It costs about twice the cheapest unit here, which publishes all of those.
Who should not buy one of these at all
Three groups, and this page is worth less to you than the honesty is.
Anyone dealing with actual mold. If there is a musty smell, a damp wall or visible growth, adding humidity is the wrong direction. Find and fix the moisture source. A purifier can reduce airborne spores while you do that, and a dehumidifier is the appliance that helps.
Anyone in a humid climate. If your summer indoor humidity already sits near 60 percent, a humidifier is a solution to a problem you do not have. Buy a standalone purifier and skip the water entirely.
Anyone who wants the best of both. A combo is a compromise by construction. Two separate appliances will out-perform one at both jobs, usually for a similar total price, and they fail independently. The case for a combo is one power outlet, one footprint and one thing to maintain — convenience, honestly described.
How to run one without making things worse
Buy a hygrometer. They cost about the price of a coffee. Without one you are guessing at the only number that matters, and on three of these five machines there is nothing on board that will tell you.
Aim for 40 to 50 percent. That sits inside the EPA’s ideal band with room for error, and it is comfortable.
Do not run it against a cold exterior wall or window. Air near cold surfaces is colder, so its relative humidity is higher than the room average, and that is where condensation forms first regardless of what the middle of the room reads.
Empty the tank when you are not using it. Standing water in a warm room grows things, and a combo unit will then blow them past a filter that was not designed to catch them.
Use distilled water in a cool mist unit if your water is hard. It removes the white dust problem at the cost of buying water, and it protects the filter you are paying to replace.
Run the purifier alone in summer. On the Airthereal you can physically detach the humidifier. On the others, leave the tank empty.
Common questions about air purifier and humidifier combos
Does an air purifier remove humidity?
No. An air purifier moves air through a filter and returns it to the room. It does not change the moisture content in any meaningful way. If you need to reduce humidity, the appliance is a dehumidifier, which is what the EPA’s mold guidance recommends.
Can a humidifier cause mold?
It can contribute. Mold needs sustained moisture, and the EPA advises keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. A humidifier running unattended in a closed room, with no humidistat, is the scenario to avoid. Used with a target humidity and a hygrometer, in a dry room, it is not a mold risk.
Is a combo unit better than buying both separately?
Not on performance. Two dedicated appliances will do each job better and fail independently, and they often cost about the same together. A combo wins on space, on a single power outlet and on having one machine to maintain rather than two.
What is white dust and how do I stop it?
It is the minerals that were dissolved in your tap water, left on surfaces after the water evaporates. It comes from ultrasonic and cool mist humidifiers, not evaporative ones, because evaporative units leave the minerals on the wick. Use distilled water, or choose an evaporative unit.
Do these actually help with allergies?
The filtration side can reduce airborne particles including pollen and dander, which is what the HEPA claims describe. The humidification side is more about comfort in dry air than about allergens. Be wary of any listing that folds both into a single health claim, because they are doing different things.
How often do I have to clean one?
More often than a purifier alone, because of the water. A wick or water tank left damp is a place for growth, which is the failure mode specific to this category. Blueair’s washable wick is the only one of our five that names a maintenance path in the listing itself.
