The short version
Face oil and moisturizer are frequently treated as alternatives when they do different jobs, and the confusion causes a specific, common and entirely avoidable failure.
A moisturizer is an emulsion of water and oil held together by an emulsifier, usually with humectants to draw water in and a preservative system because anything containing water needs one. It delivers water, holds it and seals it, in one step.
A face oil is fat. It contains no water and no humectant, so it adds nothing. What it does is slow water escaping from the skin surface and fill the gaps between surface cells so skin feels smooth. Applied over damp skin it traps that water; applied to dry skin it seals in the dryness.
That last sentence is the whole argument. If you have tried a face oil and found it did nothing, you almost certainly applied it to dry skin.
What a moisturizer actually does
The word covers a category rather than a mechanism, and most moisturizers combine all three roles.
The water phase delivers hydration directly and carries water-soluble ingredients. This is why a moisturizer works on dry skin where an oil does not.
The humectants, usually glycerin, draw water from deeper skin layers and from humid air into the outer layer. Glycerin is unglamorous, cheap and among the best-evidenced ingredients in skincare.
The occlusive layer slows that water evaporating away again.
The emulsifier holds oil and water together, and the preservative system prevents microbial growth, which is mandatory in any product containing water.
Why it is the more forgiving product. A moisturizer works at any point in the day, on any state of skin, without technique. That reliability is why dermatology recommends moisturizers rather than oils for barrier repair.
What a face oil actually does
It is occlusive and emollient, never humectant. Everything follows from this.
Occlusion means slowing transepidermal water loss, the continuous evaporation of water from skin. Reducing that loss lets the skin’s own moisture accumulate.
Emollience means filling the microscopic gaps between cells on the skin surface, which makes skin feel smooth and look less flaky, and improves how it reflects light.
What it cannot do is add water, because there is none in the bottle.
The technique that makes it work. Apply to damp skin, or over a hydrating serum, or over a moisturizer. Any of these gives the oil water to seal in. Applying it to skin that is already dry gives it nothing to work with, and the result is skin that feels smoother without being any more hydrated.
Oils differ meaningfully from each other. High-linoleic oils such as rosehip and grapeseed are lighter and absorb faster. High-oleic oils such as argan, marula and avocado are richer and sit longer. Which one you need
If your skin is genuinely dry, start with a moisturizer. Dryness is a lack of oil and usually a lack of water too, and a product supplying both is the more complete answer.
If your skin is dehydrated but oily, prioritise humectants. Dehydration is a lack of water and can happen on oily skin, which is why people describe skin as feeling tight and looking shiny at once. A light hydrating serum under a light moisturizer suits this better than any oil.
If you want both, layer. Moisturizer first to deliver water, oil on top to seal it. This works considerably better than either alone in winter or on eczema-prone skin, and it is the approach dermatology tends to favour.
If you only want one product, choose the moisturizer. It is more forgiving, works without technique, and delivers what an oil cannot.
If your skin is not dry at all, you may need neither. Skin that is comfortable, not flaking and not tight is not deficient in anything. Moisturizer on such skin is a comfort and finish product, which is a perfectly good reason to use it and worth recognising as what it is.
Dry skin and dehydrated skin are different problems
The most useful distinction in this whole subject and the one most often collapsed.
Dry skin lacks oil. It is a skin type, relatively stable, and tends to run in families. It feels rough, looks dull and flakes. It benefits from occlusives and emollients.
Dehydrated skin lacks water. It is a condition rather than a type, temporary, and can affect anyone including people with very oily skin. It feels tight, looks a little crepey, and fine lines are more visible. It benefits from humectants.
Why it matters. Treating dehydration with heavy oils produces skin that feels greasy and still tight. Treating dryness with a watery gel produces skin that feels briefly better and then worse.
How to tell. Oily skin that feels tight is dehydrated. Skin that flakes and feels rough regardless of season is dry. Many people have both.
The barrier, and why most skin problems come back to it
Nearly every complaint in skincare traces to the same structure.
What it is. The outermost layer of skin, dead cells embedded in lipids, arranged rather like bricks in mortar. It holds water in and irritants out, and it renews on roughly a four-week cycle.
When it is compromised, water leaves faster than it should and irritants penetrate more easily. The result is skin that stings when products are applied, reddens easily, feels tight and shiny rather than glowing, and may produce more oil while feeling dehydrated.
What damages it. Over-exfoliation is the leading self-inflicted cause. Harsh cleansers, hot water, over-washing, cold dry air and stacking too many actives all contribute.
Why it is misdiagnosed. Compromised barrier looks like dullness and congestion, so the instinctive response is to exfoliate more, which makes it worse. This cycle is extremely common.
Recovery is unglamorous. Stop all exfoliation for two to four weeks, use a plain moisturizer and sunscreen, and the barrier rebuilds itself. Nothing needs to be bought, which is why this advice is rarely prominent.

The ingredients that do the work
A short glossary, because recognising which role an ingredient plays makes any label readable.
Glycerin is the workhorse humectant. Cheap, unglamorous, extremely well evidenced, and present near the top of most good moisturizers. A product leading with glycerin is not cutting corners.
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that holds a great deal of water relative to its weight. It is genuinely effective and heavily oversold, and it needs an occlusive over it or in humid conditions it can draw water from deeper skin and lose it to dry air.
Urea is both humectant and mildly keratolytic, softening rough skin. Underused and excellent on very dry skin.
Ceramides are lipids naturally present in the skin barrier. Supplying them topically has reasonable evidence for supporting barrier repair, which makes them one of the more substantiated additions in moisturizers.
Niacinamide has decent evidence for barrier function, redness and pigmentation at concentrations around 4 to 5%. It is well tolerated and one of the few actives that plays well with almost everything.
Squalane is a saturated emollient, usually derived from sugarcane or olives. It does not oxidise the way unsaturated plant oils do, which solves the rancidity problem entirely, and it feels lighter than most oils.
Petrolatum is the most effective occlusive available, reducing water loss substantially more than any plant oil, and among the least allergenic substances in dermatology. It is greasy and petroleum-derived, which is why plant oils are more pleasant and not more effective.
Shea butter and plant butters sit between emollient and occlusive, rich and slow to absorb, and suit very dry skin and body use more than facial use on oily skin.
Fragrance and parfum conceal potentially dozens of undisclosed components and rank among the leading contact allergens in patch testing. Essential oils count, which catches people who switched to natural products expecting fewer reactions.
How oils and moisturizers interact with actives
If you use a retinoid, an acid or vitamin C, the order and pairing matter more than usual.
Retinoids are the best-evidenced anti-ageing ingredient available, and they are also the most irritating. Dryness, flaking and stinging in the first weeks are expected rather than a sign of failure.
Buffering works. Applying moisturizer before a retinoid, or mixing the two, reduces irritation with only modest loss of efficacy. This is a standard dermatological suggestion for people struggling to tolerate one.
Oils go on top of actives, never underneath. An oil layer beneath a water-based active blocks it. This is the most common layering error.
Do not start two actives at once. Introducing a retinoid and an acid in the same week makes it impossible to know which caused a reaction, and doubles the barrier disruption.
Acids and retinoids on alternate nights rather than together suits most people. Combining them is a route to a compromised barrier for modest additional benefit.
Vitamin C is unstable, oxidising on exposure to light and air. A serum that has turned deep orange or brown has degraded. Dark glass and an airless pump are worth seeking out.
Sunscreen is non-negotiable with any exfoliating active. AHAs increase photosensitivity measurably, and using them without daily sunscreen works against the reason you started.
Nothing needs to be layered in seven steps. Cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen is a complete routine, and adding an active is optional rather than expected.
Season, climate and the variables nobody sells
Skin behaves differently across the year, and a routine that fails in January may be correct in July.
Cold air holds less moisture. Winter air, indoors and out, is genuinely drier than most desert climates once heating is running, which is why skin that is fine in summer flakes in December. A richer moisturizer in winter is a rational adjustment.
Humectants need humidity to draw from. In very dry air, a humectant applied without an occlusive over it can pull water from deeper skin layers and lose it to the atmosphere. This is why hyaluronic acid alone sometimes makes skin feel tighter in winter.
Hot showers strip more than any cleanser. Reducing water temperature does more for dry skin than upgrading products, and it costs nothing.
Hard water leaves mineral residue that contributes to tightness and dullness. If your skin behaves differently when you travel, this is often the explanation.
Air conditioning dries skin as effectively as heating, which is why the seasonal pattern is not simply winter dry and summer comfortable in hot climates.
Sleep, stress and hydration affect skin appearance genuinely if unglamorously. None of them are products, and all of them show up faster than most active ingredients.
Certification, and why skincare is the hardest category
USDA organic is an agricultural standard. It applies cleanly to a product that is a farmed plant and nothing else. Cold-pressed rosehip seed oil is rosehip seeds, pressed, so the standard fits perfectly.
It fits emulsions badly. A moisturizer contains water, emulsifiers, preservatives and stabilisers, several of which are not agricultural products at all. This is why so few moisturizers carry the seal while single oils frequently do, and it is a structural feature of the standard rather than a comment on quality.
COSMOS and Ecocert were built for cosmetics. They set minimum percentages of organic content within a formulation, restrict permitted synthetics and processing chemistry, and apply to the finished product. A COSMOS-certified moisturizer is making a real audited claim.
We score both as genuine. Penalising a COSMOS-certified product for not being USDA would misrepresent the category, and it is a deliberate departure from how we treat food.

What the comedogenic ratings are worth
The numbers circulated online deserve less deference than they get.
Where they come from. Largely from studies conducted decades ago applying pure ingredients at high concentration to rabbit ear skin under occlusion.
Why that does not transfer. Rabbit ears are not human faces, pure ingredients are not formulations, and high concentration under occlusion is not a few drops pressed into skin.
What can honestly be said. Some people break out from some oils. Coconut oil is the one most frequently implicated. There is no reliable way to predict who from a chart.
The practical approach is the same as for any new product: introduce one thing at a time, give it two to four weeks, and judge on what your skin does rather than on a number assigned to an ingredient in a laboratory in 1979.
Cleansing, which decides how everything else performs
The step before both products, and the one most likely to be causing the problem you are trying to solve.
Over-cleansing is extremely common. Skin that feels squeaky clean has been stripped of the lipids forming its barrier. That tight feeling is widely interpreted as cleanliness and is actually mild damage.
Foaming cleansers with strong surfactants suit oily skin and are frequently too much for anything else. A cream, milk or oil cleanser removes makeup and sunscreen without stripping.
Once a day is enough for most people. Cleanse properly in the evening to remove sunscreen, makeup and the day’s oil. In the morning, water alone is sufficient for many people, particularly anyone with dry or reactive skin.
Lukewarm water, always. Hot water strips lipids and leaves skin tight, and this is one of the easiest improvements available.
Double cleansing has a specific purpose and is not a universal requirement. If you wear heavy sunscreen or long-wear makeup, an oil cleanser followed by a gentle water-based one removes it properly. If you wear neither, one cleanse is fine.
Cleansing wipes are the worst option. They smear rather than remove, leave residue and surfactant on the skin, and involve dragging at delicate areas. Acceptable in emergencies, poor as a routine.
If your moisturizer stings, the cleanser is a more likely culprit than the moisturizer. Stinging on application is a barrier signal.
What to skip
A short list, since a page comparing two products should be honest about what neither is needed for.
Toners, mostly. The original purpose was correcting skin pH after alkaline soap, which modern cleansers no longer disrupt. Hydrating toners are essentially thin serums, which is fine and not a separate necessary step.
Separate eye creams, for most people. They are typically a lighter moisturizer at a considerably higher price per ounce. A gentle facial moisturizer applied carefully around the orbital bone does the same job.
Anything promising to shrink pores. Pore size is largely genetic and structural, and pores have no muscle to close. Cleansing changes how full they are, not how large.
Collagen in a cream. Collagen molecules are far too large to penetrate skin, so topical collagen acts as a surface humectant. That is a real if modest effect and it has nothing to do with the collagen in your dermis.
Devices bought on impulse. Cleansing brushes in particular over-exfoliate a great many people who were not exfoliating otherwise.
Products bought to fix a reaction to another product. The usual answer is to stop the causing product and use nothing much for a fortnight, which sells nothing and works.
Seven-step routines bought all at once. The predictable outcome is two weeks of enthusiasm followed by an expensive shelf. Two products used consistently beat seven used sporadically.
Building a routine that works
Thinnest to thickest. Water-based products before oil-based ones, because an oil layer prevents anything water-based penetrating it.
Morning: cleanse, moisturize, sunscreen. That is a complete routine. Sunscreen is the single highest-value step and the one most often skipped.
Evening: cleanse, treat if you are using an active, moisturize. Oil last if you use one.
Apply to damp skin. Everything works better, and for oils it is the difference between working and not.
Two to four drops of oil is a full face. More sits on the surface and transfers to your collar.
Introduce one product at a time, two to four weeks apart, and never alongside a new retinoid or acid. If something goes wrong you want to know what caused it.
Patch test. Inside the forearm, several days, before anything goes on your face.
Common questions about face oil and moisturizer
Can a face oil replace my moisturizer?
Usually not. Oils are occlusive and emollient but never humectant, meaning they seal water in without adding any. A moisturizer is an emulsion delivering water and sealing it in one step, which makes it the more complete product.
