The short version
Organic hair care is a category built on a genuine premise and sold with a great deal of exaggeration. The genuine part is that conventional hair products contain sulfates, silicones, synthetic fragrance and preservatives that some people react to or would rather avoid, and that organic certification meaningfully restricts all of those. The exaggeration is nearly everything said about repair, growth and nourishment.
Two facts underpin everything on this page. Hair above the scalp is dead protein with no blood supply and no repair mechanism, so nothing applied to it heals damage or feeds it. And the scalp is skin, so most genuine hair problems are actually skin problems and respond to skin logic rather than hair marketing.
If you take one practical thing away: when people switch to organic hair care and find their hair gets worse, the cause is almost always silicone withdrawal, it lasts two to six weeks, and most people give up in week two.
What organic certification restricts
Worth knowing precisely, because the benefit is specific rather than general.
Sulfates. Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate are the surfactants that produce a rich lather and clean aggressively. They are not dangerous, and the safety scares attached to them over the years have not held up. They are stripping, particularly on dry, coarse, curly or colour-treated hair, and organic standards exclude them as synthetic petroleum-derived ingredients.
Silicones. Dimethicone and relatives coat the hair shaft in a smooth water-repellent film. They work extremely well and are not absorbed meaningfully. They are excluded for being synthetic polymers, not for being harmful, and the genuine drawback is buildup.
Synthetic fragrance. This is the restriction with the strongest health argument behind it. Fragrance mix is consistently among the leading causes of allergic contact dermatitis in patch testing, and a single “fragrance” listing can conceal dozens of undisclosed components.
Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives such as DMDM hydantoin and quaternium-15. They work, and they are recognised contact allergens. Organic standards prohibit them outright.
Synthetic dyes and certain processing chemistry, along with requirements around wastewater treatment at the manufacturing facilities.
What certification does not restrict is efficacy claims. A certified organic shampoo can make exactly the same overstated promises about repair and growth as a conventional one, and frequently does.
The silicone transition, explained properly
This is the single most useful section here, because it explains the most common disappointment in the category.
What silicones do. They deposit a smooth, uniform film over the hair shaft. That film fills the microscopic ridges of a damaged cuticle, reflects light evenly, and dramatically reduces friction between strands. The result is instant slip, shine and detangling that no natural oil quite matches.
Why it becomes a problem. Non-water-soluble silicones do not rinse away with a mild surfactant. They accumulate layer on layer. If you pair a silicone conditioner with a sulfate-free shampoo, the shampoo cannot remove what the conditioner deposits, and hair gradually feels heavier, duller and less responsive to any product you apply.
What happens when you stop. The film that was doing the smoothing is gone, and the actual condition of your hair is revealed rather than created. Hair often feels rougher, drier, more tangled and frizzier. This is not the organic product failing; it is the absence of a cosmetic coating.
How long it takes. Two to six weeks for most people, longer for very long or heavily processed hair. During that time the residual buildup clears and the cuticle settles.
How to make it easier. Use a clarifying wash once at the start to strip existing buildup rather than waiting for it to wear off. Change shampoo and conditioner together rather than one at a time. Expect two bad weeks and plan the switch for a period when it does not matter much.

What conditioner actually does
Conditioner is the most honest product in hair care once you strip the marketing off it.
The mechanism is electrical. Damaged hair carries a negative charge, and more damage means more negative charge. Conditioning agents are cationic, meaning positively charged, so they are drawn preferentially to the areas that need them most. This is genuinely elegant and it is why conditioner self-distributes toward damage.
The deposited layer smooths lifted cuticle scales, reducing friction between strands. Less friction means less tangling, less breakage during brushing, and more even light reflection, which reads as shine.
Emollients slow water loss from the shaft. Hair holding water is more flexible and less likely to snap, which is the real mechanism behind conditioner reducing breakage over months.
What it does not do is repair, nourish or rebuild. Split ends can be temporarily glued and will separate again. Nutrition reaches hair through the follicle, which affects new growth and not the length already grown.
Protein and moisture, and the balance most people get wrong
More hair complaints trace to this than to certification, brand or price.
Protein, usually hydrolysed wheat, rice, silk or keratin, is small enough to sit in surface damage and temporarily fill it. It adds strength and structure and it washes out.
Moisture comes from humectants and emollients that help hair hold water and bend without breaking.
Too much protein makes hair stiff, straw-like and prone to snapping. This is regularly mistaken for dryness, which leads people to apply more of a protein-containing product and worsen it.
Too much moisture makes hair limp, mushy and over-elastic, stretching when wet and refusing to hold shape.
The test: pull a wet strand gently. Snapping immediately means it needs moisture. Stretching a long way without springing back means it needs protein. Most people need mostly moisture with occasional protein, which is why strengthening products are periodic rather than daily.
Porosity, and why identical products behave differently
More useful than curl-type charts, and less discussed.
Porosity is how readily the cuticle admits and releases water, determined by how tightly the overlapping scales lie.
Low porosity hair has tightly packed scales. Water beads on it, it takes ages to wet through and ages to dry. Products sit on the surface, so rich creams and heavy oils build up and weigh it down. It wants lighter formulations applied to damp rather than soaking hair.
High porosity hair has raised or damaged scales from colouring, heat or age. It absorbs water instantly and loses it just as fast, dries quickly and frizzes in humidity. It wants richer products, more of them, and genuinely benefits from protein because there are real gaps to fill.
Medium porosity tolerates most things, and is the hair every product is designed around.
The float test is unreliable despite dominating online advice. Product residue and how you drop the strand both skew it. Better signals: how long your hair takes to wet in the shower, how long it takes to dry, and whether products vanish into it or sit on it.
The scalp is skin
Most persistent hair problems are scalp problems, and treating them as hair problems is why people cycle through products without improvement.
Dandruff is a yeast overgrowth, not dryness. Malassezia feeds on sebum, which is why dandruff is associated with oily scalps and why washing less, the instinctive response to flaking, makes it worse. Itching without flaking is often fragrance. Contact dermatitis from a hair product presents as an itchy scalp that people attribute to dryness. Essential oils count as fragrance here, which catches people who switched to natural products expecting fewer reactions.
Flaking that is not dandruff includes scalp psoriasis, with thicker silvery scale on well-defined patches, and simple product buildup from dry shampoo and styling waxes.
Oil left on the scalp for days feeds the yeast. Enthusiastic scalp oiling is a common route to a newly flaking scalp.
What the evidence says about hair growth
The most oversold corner of the category, with one genuinely interesting exception.
No shampoo grows hair. A wash contacts the scalp for perhaps ninety seconds before being rinsed away, which is not how a growth treatment works. Every treatment with real evidence is a leave-on.
Rosemary oil is the exception worth knowing. A randomised trial compared rosemary oil against 2% minoxidil over six months in androgenetic alopecia and found comparable increases in hair count, with less scalp itching in the rosemary group. That is one study with a modest sample against decades of evidence for minoxidil, and it is far more than any other botanical can point to.
Biotin is the most marketed and among the weakest. Genuine deficiency causes hair loss and correcting it helps, but deficiency is uncommon in people eating normally, and topical biotin on a dead hair shaft has essentially no evidence. Biotin supplements also interfere with several laboratory tests including thyroid and cardiac markers.
Caffeine has laboratory evidence in tissue culture and small human studies. Plausible and under-evidenced.
Onion juice has a small trial in alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition entirely different from pattern hair loss. It does not transfer.
Scalp massage has a small study suggesting benefit over months and costs nothing, which arguably makes it the best value item in the category.

Hair loss: what it is and when to worry
Androgenetic alopecia is common pattern loss, genetic and hormonal, with follicles progressively miniaturising. Minoxidil and finasteride are the treatments with strong evidence.
Telogen effluvium is diffuse shedding a few months after illness, surgery, childbirth, crash dieting or severe stress. It resolves on its own within six to nine months, which is why products started during recovery so often appear to work.
Iron deficiency and thyroid dysfunction are common, easily tested and easily corrected causes of shedding. Ferritin specifically rather than just haemoglobin, since stored iron can be low without anaemia. This is the highest-value action for anyone with sudden diffuse shedding.
Traction alopecia from tight ponytails, braids and extensions reverses if caught early and scars permanently if sustained.
See a doctor for sudden or patchy loss, scalp pain, redness or burning, or if follicle openings are no longer visible. Scarring alopecias destroy follicles permanently and early treatment preserves what remains.
Hair care by type
Fine hair is weighed down by almost everything. Condition mid-lengths and ends only, every second or third wash rather than every time, and prefer lighter formulations. Daily conditioning is the usual cause of fine hair going flat.
Thick or coarse hair tolerates and benefits from richer products and generally needs conditioner every wash.
Curly and coily hair is the driest by structure, because sebum travels down a curved shaft poorly. It needs the most moisture, the least manipulation, and detangling only when saturated with conditioner.
Colour-treated hair is high porosity by definition, since the process lifts the cuticle. It benefits from protein and from sulfate-free washing, which strips less colour.
Baby and children’s hair needs less than the aisle suggests. Most babies need bathing two or three times a week, and fragrance-free matters more than certification on skin that is thinner and more permeable, which our organic baby shampoo guide covers in detail.
Habits that matter more than products
Heat styling is the largest controllable cause of damage. Above roughly 180°C keratin structure degrades, and lowering the temperature does more than any product upgrade.
Brushing wet hair breaks it, because hair swollen with water is at its most fragile. Detangle with a wide-tooth comb while conditioner is in, from the ends upward.
Rough towel drying causes friction damage. Squeeze rather than rub.
Tight styles worn daily cause traction alopecia. If it hurts, it is too tight.
Chemical processing stacks. Bleach, permanent colour and relaxers each lift the cuticle, and combining them compounds the damage considerably.
Conditioner on roots is the most common application error. Roots are the newest, least damaged hair, next to a scalp already producing oil.
How to read a hair product label
“Natural” means nothing. Unregulated in cosmetics, no definition, no verification.
“Made with organic ingredients” is not certified organic. Some unstated proportion is certified, and that proportion can be small.
“Sulfate-free” is meaningful and specific. It tells you the surfactant system is milder, which matters for dry, curly and colour-treated hair.
“Silicone-free” is also meaningful, and worth pairing with sulfate-free rather than mixing the two systems.
“Repairs” and “restores” are marketing. Dead protein does not repair. What these products do is coat and temporarily fill, which is genuinely useful and not what the word means.
“Supports healthy hair growth” is a structure-function phrase chosen specifically to avoid a drug claim. Any product may say it.
Ingredient order reflects concentration. If the hero botanical appears near the end of a long list, it is present in a token amount.
Building a routine that is actually sustainable
The most common failure in this category is not choosing wrong products. It is choosing too many, changing them constantly, and never finding out what works.
Two products is a complete routine for most people. Shampoo and conditioner. Everything else is optional, and adding items before you know how your hair behaves on the basics makes it impossible to attribute any change.
Change one thing at a time. The exception is the silicone transition, where shampoo and conditioner should move together because they operate as a system. Otherwise, introduce one product and give it six weeks.
Six weeks is the honest evaluation window. Hair grows roughly a centimetre a month, the growth cycle turns over slowly, and scalp conditions respond over weeks rather than days. Judging a product after one wash tells you about slip and scent, which are the least important things about it.
Wash frequency is a scalp decision, not a hair one. Oily scalps need washing more often, including daily. Dry scalps and coily hair need it less. Hair itself is largely indifferent, and the widespread advice to wash less for hair health is aimed at reducing mechanical handling rather than at washing itself.
Rotate rather than replace. If you use a protein-containing conditioner, alternate it with a plain moisturising one instead of using it exclusively. The same applies to clarifying shampoo, which is a periodic reset rather than a weekly product.
Keep one clarifying product. Even in a fully organic routine, buildup happens from hard water minerals, styling products and heavy oils. A stronger wash once every few weeks prevents the gradual dulling that people otherwise blame on their regular shampoo.
Write down what you changed. This sounds excessive and is the difference between learning something and cycling through bottles for years. A note on your phone with the date and the product is enough.
Water, seasons and the variables nobody sells you
Several things affect hair noticeably and cannot be bought, which is why they rarely appear in product content.
Hard water is the underrated one. Calcium and magnesium in hard water deposit on the hair shaft, leaving it rough, dull and less responsive to conditioner. It also reduces lather, prompting people to use more shampoo and strip further. If your hair behaves differently when you travel, water hardness is the likely explanation. A chelating or clarifying wash removes mineral buildup, and a shower filter helps in genuinely hard areas.
Humidity drives frizz. Frizz is high porosity hair absorbing atmospheric moisture and swelling unevenly. That is why the same routine works beautifully in winter and fails in August, and why anti-frizz products are essentially sealants.
Winter heating dries everything. Indoor heated air in winter is drier than most desert climates, which affects hair as it affects skin. Richer conditioning in cold months is a rational seasonal adjustment rather than a marketing invention.
Chlorine and salt water both strip and roughen. Wetting hair with clean water before swimming means it absorbs less pool water, and rinsing immediately afterwards limits the damage.
Sun degrades hair as it degrades skin, breaking down keratin and stripping colour. Hats do more than any UV-protective spray.
Sleep friction causes real mechanical damage over years. A silk or satin pillowcase reduces it, and this is one of the few product claims in the adjacent space that holds up straightforwardly, since it is simple physics rather than chemistry.
Common questions about organic hair care
Why did my hair get worse after switching to organic products?
