Calcium moves through the plant in the transpiration stream, which means it travels with water. When watering is inconsistent, the plant cannot move calcium into rapidly expanding fruit fast enough, and the tissue at the far end fails.
Most soils contain adequate calcium. Adding more to a soil that already has enough does not fix the problem, which is why gardeners who bury eggshells and crushed antacids are frequently disappointed. What fixes it is even moisture: mulch, deeper less frequent watering, and containers large enough not to dry out daily.

A feeding schedule that works
Timing matters as much as product choice, and the sequence is straightforward.
At transplanting. Work granular fertilizer into the planting hole and the surrounding soil according to the label rate, and water in well. Phosphorus supports root establishment at this stage, and getting it into the root zone rather than on the surface matters because phosphorus moves through soil very slowly.

Worth being direct, because a great deal of fertilizer is bought to solve problems it cannot touch.
Blossom end rot is usually a watering problem. Mulch to hold moisture, water deeply and less often rather than lightly and daily, and use containers large enough not to dry out between waterings. Calcium fertilizer helps a genuinely deficient soil and does nothing for an erratically watered one.
Leaf curl is most often heat stress or a response to heavy pruning, not a nutrient issue.
Cracked fruit comes from a sudden influx of water after a dry spell, usually rain after drought. Consistent moisture prevents it.

Reading the label, and the numbers that are not on it
Fertilizer labelling is regulated, which means the important figures are there by law even when the marketing is doing its best to distract from them.
The guaranteed analysis is the legally required panel, usually on the back or side. It states the NPK percentages and any secondary nutrients, including calcium, magnesium and sulphur, that the manufacturer is prepared to guarantee. If calcium is not in the guaranteed analysis, the product does not contain a meaningful, guaranteed amount of it, whatever the front of the bag implies.
The derived from statement is the next most useful line. It names the actual inputs: feather meal, bone meal, alfalfa meal, kelp, poultry manure, sulphate of potash. This matters because inputs determine release rate. Blood meal releases nitrogen within days; feather meal takes months. Two products with identical NPK can behave completely differently depending on what the nutrients came from.
What the label will not tell you is how quickly the whole product becomes available, because that depends on your soil temperature and biology rather than the fertilizer. Organic granular feed in cold spring soil does almost nothing, because the microbes that mineralise it are not active yet. The same product in warm summer soil works within a fortnight. This is the single biggest difference from synthetic fertilizer, which dissolves regardless of temperature, and it explains a lot of disappointed early-season gardeners.
One further point on the percentages themselves: organic fertilizers carry lower NPK numbers than synthetics almost universally, and that is not a weakness. Test the soil before you buy anything
This is the recommendation that saves the most money and gets followed least, so it is worth making the case specifically.
A basic soil test costs less than two bags of fertilizer and tells you pH and the levels of the major nutrients. That matters for tomatoes for two concrete reasons.
pH controls what the plant can absorb. Tomatoes prefer slightly acidic soil, roughly 6.0 to 6.8. Outside that range nutrients present in the soil become chemically unavailable regardless of how much you add. Phosphorus in particular locks up in alkaline soil, so a gardener with a pH of 7.8 can add phosphorus indefinitely and see no response. Correcting the pH is the fix, and no fertilizer does it.
Phosphorus accumulates. It moves through soil very slowly and does not leach the way nitrogen does, so gardeners who add bone meal or a phosphorus-heavy feed every season build up a surplus over years. Excess phosphorus is not harmless: it interferes with the uptake of iron and zinc, suppresses the mycorrhizal fungi that help roots forage, and runs off into waterways. A soil test is the only way to know whether you are adding something you already have too much of.
The same test usually reports calcium, which settles the blossom end rot question directly rather than by guesswork. If calcium is adequate and you still get end rot, the problem is watering and no product on this page will change it.
Most county extension services in the United States offer soil testing cheaply, and home kits give a rough pH reading for a few dollars. Either is better than buying a fourth specialist amendment on the assumption that something must be missing.
