- Best Organic Mascara: hypoallergenic has no federal definition, and one brand makes a lash-growth drug claim.
- Best Organic Lipstick: iron oxides, carmine beetles or petroleum lakes: one listing actually names its pigments.
- Best Organic Perfume: in three of five listings, “organic” describes the alcohol carrier and not the scent.
- Best Organic Face Mask: most mask damage comes from frequency, not ingredients. Certified picks with honest limits.
- Best Organic Body Oil: oil seals water in rather than adding it, so how you apply it matters more than the bottle.
- Best Organic Face Oil: USDA certification works for single plant oils and poorly for blends.
- Best Organic Hair Growth Shampoo: one trial found rosemary oil comparable to minoxidil over six months.
- Best Organic Conditioner: it does one job well and several claimed jobs not at all, with the silicone debate settled.
- Best Organic Dandruff Shampoo: dandruff is a yeast overgrowth, and the actives that treat it are not organic.
- Best Organic Men’s Skincare: thicker, oilier skin and daily shaving change the routine. The marketing stripped out.
What makes skincare genuinely organic
The words “natural,” “clean,” and “botanical” are not regulated. Certification is. When we research an organic skincare product, we weigh these first:
- Certification: USDA Organic, COSMOS Organic, or a comparable third-party seal, not just an “organic” claim on the front label.
- Ingredient purity: a short, recognizable ingredient list with a high share of organic ingredients and no needless synthetics.
- Ingredient safety: low-concern ratings in independent databases such as EWG Skin Deep, and no controversial preservatives or fragrance loopholes.
- Honest labeling: on-pack claims that match the actual certification and formula.
Guides and explainers
- Organic Skincare 101: how to read an ingredient list, spot greenwashing, and build a simple routine.
- Skincare Ingredients Worth Avoiding: not every scary-sounding ingredient earns its reputation. What the evidence supports.
- Organic Hair Care: hair is dead protein and nothing repairs it. Silicones, sulfates and the transition period.
- Face Oil vs Moisturizer: oils seal water in and add none, which is why applying oil to dry skin fails.
- How to read an ingredient list: the order is legally meaningful, and the last third of the list is where the marketing hides.
