What makes food genuinely organic
“Natural” and “clean” are not regulated on food labels. The USDA Organic seal is. When we research an organic food, we weigh these first:
- USDA Certified Organic: grown and handled without synthetic pesticides, GMOs, or synthetic fertilizers, and verified by a third party.
- Ingredient simplicity: a short, recognizable ingredient list with no needless additives, sweeteners, or fillers.
- Traceable sourcing: single-origin or clearly-sourced products, which matter most for fraud-prone items like honey and olive oil.
- Freshness and processing: raw, cold-pressed, or minimally processed where it preserves quality, with clear harvest or roast dates.
Guides and explainers
- What the USDA Organic Database Tells You: more than a third of the operations listed in it are no longer certified.
- How to Store Organic Produce: it spoils faster because post-harvest fungicides and waxes are prohibited.
- Are Herbal Teas Really Caffeine-Free?: caffeine comes from one plant, so the rule is simple. Three infusions catch people out.
- What Oil Labels Actually Mean: which terms are legally defined, and why refined versus unrefined is the distinction that matters.
- Seasonal Organic Eating: what to buy each month, and how to preserve a summer glut without canning equipment.
- Are Seed Oils Bad?: the omega-6 inflammation claim mostly fails in human trials. The processing argument is stronger.
- Organic Milk vs Regular Milk: why it lasts three times longer, and why that has nothing to do with purity.
- Organic Coffee and Tea: why organic matters most for these two crops, from beans and leaves through to creamer.
- How to Build an Organic Pantry: which staples to prioritize, and where the premium is not worth paying.
- White Tea vs Green Tea: the same plant, one processing step apart, and it changes caffeine, price and brewing.
- Organic vs Natural vs Non-GMO: only one of the three is regulated; the other two are worth what the seller says they are.
- How to spot greenwashing: 12 label tricks, from invented seals to percentages measured against the wrong thing.
- The Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen: where buying organic changes your exposure most, and where it barely moves.
- Is organic worth it?: an honest cost breakdown, including the categories where the premium buys you nothing.
- Glyphosate in food, explained: the pre-harvest desiccation practice that puts it in oats, and which crops carry the most.
- Fair Trade vs Organic: one certifies the farming, the other the price the farmer was paid, and neither implies the other.
- How to read an ingredient list: the order is legally meaningful, and the last third of the list is where the marketing hides.
- What Regenerative Organic means: it requires organic certification first, then adds soil, animal welfare and farmworker criteria.
- Heavy metals in organic food: organic rules never test for lead, arsenic or cadmium, and 8 of 236 listings we read mention them at all.
- Lead in cinnamon and ground spices: the FDA found up to 5,110 ppm in recalled cinnamon, and its alert list is still being updated.
- Juice labels explained: cocktail, drink and beverage are legal signals that it is not 100% juice; cold pressed is defined by nobody.
